Spatial statistics in star-forming regions: is star formation driven by column density alone?

چکیده
ABSTRACT Star formation is known to occur more readily where raw materials are available. This often expressed by a ‘Kennicutt–Schmidt’ relation the surface density of young stellar objects (YSOs) proportional column some power, ?. The aim this work was determine if alone sufficient explain locations Class 0/I YSOs within Serpens South, Core, Ophiuchus, NGC 1333, and IC348, or there clumping avoidance that would point additional influences on star formation. Using O-ring test as summary statistic, 95 per cent confidence envelopes were produced for different values ? from probability models made using Herschel maps. tested against four distribution models: best estimate region, = 0 above minimum threshold, zero elsewhere, 1, power law represents five regions collective, 2.05 ± 0.20. Results showed model consistent with majority and, those regions, spatial at given being random. South 1333 rejected small scales ${\sim}0.15\, \mathrm{pc}$ which implies small-scale interactions may be necessary improve model. On 0.15 pc, positions in all can well described alone.

The “true” Column Density Distribution in Star-forming Molecular Clouds
We use the COMPLETE Survey’s observations of the Perseus star-forming region to assess and intercompare three methods for measuring column density in molecular clouds: near-infrared extinction mapping; thermal emission mapping in the far-IR; and mapping the intensity of CO isotopologues. Overall, the structures shown by all three tracers are morphologically similar, but important differences ex...
متن کاملTesting the universality of star formation – I. Multiplicity in nearby star-forming regions
We have collated multiplicity data for five clusters (Taurus, Chamaeleon I, Ophiuchus, IC 348 and the Orion Nebula Cluster). We have applied the same mass ratio (flux ratios of K ≤ 2.5) and primary mass cuts (∼0.1–3.0 M ) to each cluster and therefore have directly comparable binary statistics for all five clusters in the separation range 62–620 au, and for Taurus, Chamaeleon I and Ophiuchus in...
متن کاملAge spreads in star forming regions?
Abstract. Rotation periods and projected equatorial velocities of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars in star forming regions can be combined to give projected stellar radii. Assuming random axial orientation, a Monte-Carlo model is used to illustrate that distributions of projected stellar radii are very sensitive to ages and age dispersions between 1 and 10Myr which, unlike age estimates from conve...
متن کاملChemical processes in star forming regions
This paper will review the basic concepts of gas–phase and grain surface chemistry of dense molecular clouds, where low mass and high mass stars form. The chemistry of cold pre-stellar cloud cores, where molecular freezeout and deuterium fractionation dominate, will be presented. Then, following cloud evolution after protostellar birth, hot core and shock chemistry will be discussed in view of ...
متن کاملHypersonic Molecular Shocks in Star Forming Regions
Shocks are everywhere in the Universe, and with hindsight it is easy to see why. In the John Dyson era one might be tempted to ask if indeed there is anything else? Such a coherent view of so much of the goings-on between the stars has been imparted by John and his colleagues that most interesting phenomena now have a Dyson – or Dyson-style – similarity solution to describe them. But the discov...
